Kentucky Pioneers

Mercer County, Kentucky Wills and Estates

Harrodsburg Harrodsburg Harrodsburg Harrodsburg Mercer County was formed from Lincoln County in 1785 and was named for the Revolutionary War General Hugh Mercer who was killed at the Battle of Princeton in 1777. The county seat is Harrodsburg, Kentucky. Some of the earliest settlers were: Abraham Bsnta, Alexander Bowling, Daniel and Cornelius Cozine, George Silvertooth, James Harrod, James Hornback, James Quigley, Thomas Freeman, Thomas Threlkeld, Patrick Lowry, Joseph Bohannon, John McMurtry, Harman Van Dyke, Benoni Swearengin and Matthew English. The Wills, Estates, Inventories, Orphans and Guardian Returns are all combined in the same books. A number of pages in these books were too faded and damaged to include. Effort was made by the State of Kentucky to restore some of the images, however, what you see is what you get.

Bourbon Co. KY Wills and Estates (online)

Bourbon County, Kentucky Court House Records

Paris, Kentucky Paris, KentuckySome of the most beautiful country in America is in Paris, Kentucky. In 1780 the district of Kentucky belonged to three counties in Virginia, viz: Fayette, Jefferson and Lincoln. Old Bourbon County was formed in 1786 from Fayette and Bourbon Counties, Virginia, and originally comprised 34 northeastern counties of Kentucky. When the new State of Kentucky was created in 1792, Bourbon became a county. The land itself was given by Fayette County, Virginia, and was named after the French House of Bourbon in honor of the assistance which France gave to America during the Revolutionary War. The courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1872 and again in1901, resulting in the loss of county records. Whiskey, made from corn had a distinctive flavor and became a popular drink termed Bourbon whiskey as opposed to rye whiskey. The whiskey barrels were marked Old Bourbon when they were shipped downriver from the local port on the Ohio River. The port from where the whiskey was shipped was called Limestone, now Maysville, and was located in Bourbon County until the borders were redrawn in 1789 and it became Mason County. The county seat is Paris, Kentucky.

Kentucky Tales of the Revolutionary War

Beargrass Creek in Cherokee Park near Louisville, KY
During the Revolutionary War (1780) Colonel George Slaughter, accompanied by 150 State troops, descended to the falls of the Ohio River where he established his quarters.  As it turns out, instead of protecting the sparse settlements, the site was actually more advantageous to the Indians (fighting for the British) as they could approach the banks upon their own ground and shoot the soldiers near the fort or in the settlements of Beargrass. Prisoners were taken and horses stolen.

The station where Shelbyville now stands was a weak and inefficient one, and becoming alarmed by the presence of Indians in their vicinity, its inhabitants determined to remove to Beargrass, however, were attacked near Floyd’s Fork, defeated and scattered.  Colonel John Floyd, hearing of this, immediately started to their relief.  In his party was Capt. Samuel Wells who had been on very unfriendly and even inimical terms with his superior officer. Upon his arrival near the point, Colonel Floyd separated his men and cautiously approached the enemy. But despite his skill and caution, he fell into an ambuscade and was defeated with great loss.  Floyd dismounted and was exhausted from the pursuit.  It was at this moment that Colonel  Wells rode up and dismounting, helped his old enemy into the saddle and running by his side, supported and protected him till out of the reach of danger. This noble and generous action resulted in the fast and lasting friendship of the two men.

    My Old Kentucky Home

    Appalachian Mountains
The Revolutionary War was the defining point of settlement for Kentucky.  Previous to this, the territory was claimed by the Iroquois Indians.  In 1768, the British succeeded in making a treaty to purchase (Kentucky), known as the Treaty of Fort Stanwix.  Thus, the Iroquois took the side of the loyalists during the war and were scattered throughout Kentucky, Ohio and New York.  The pension records of patriots reveal that they were formiable foes during the Northern Campaign.  The settlements crowding into Kentucky before the war caused the Shawnees north of the Ohio River to become allies with the British.  The stream of settlers crossing Appalachian Mountains from Virginia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania continued after the war until all of the various Indian tribes were driven out.  Genealogists follow the trail from those States as well as West Virginia as a place to research, because that portion was first part of the State of Virginia.
