Mercer Co. KY Wills and Estates - Digital Images - Easy to Read - #genealogy #kentuckypioneers

Mercer County, Kentucky Wills and Estates

Harrodsburg

Mercer County was formed from Lincoln County in 1785 and was named for the Revolutionary War General Hugh Mercer who was killed at the Battle of Princeton in 1777. The county seat is Harrodsburg, Kentucky. Some of the earliest settlers were: Abraham Bsnta, Alexander Bowling, Daniel and Cornelius Cozine, George Silvertooth, James Harrod, James Hornback, James Quigley, Thomas Freeman, Thomas Threlkeld, Patrick Lowry, Joseph Bohannon, John McMurtry, Harman Van Dyke, Benoni Swearengin and Matthew English. The Wills, Estates, Inventories, Orphans and Guardian Returns are all combined in the same books. A number of pages in these books were too faded and damaged to include. Effort was made by the State of Kentucky to restore some of the images, however, what you see is what you get

Taylor Distillery in Kentucky #history #genealogy #kentuckypioneers

Taylor Distillery

Taylor DistilleryOld Taylor Bourbon whiskey is produced in Frankfort, Kentucky by the Sazerac Company and was named for Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, famous distiller. Actually, the premium brand Colonel E. H. Taylor is also produced. Colonel Taylor was born in Columbia, Kentucky in 1832 and made a career of distilling whiskey. Interesting enough, Colonel Taylor was the grand nephew of General Zachary Taylor of the Mexican-American War. Stamped on the flasks is the statement "General Taylor Never Surrenders".

Bardstown Plantation in KY #kentuckypioneers #history #genealogy

Bardstown Plantation

Bardstown PlantationThe Bardstown Plantation house was built in Nelson County, Kentucky around 1818 by Judge John Rowan upon the inspiration of the ballard of Stephen Foster, My Old Kentucky Home. Foster later visited his cousins in 1852. Judge Rowan created patriotic displays just about everywhere inside the house during the construction of it. He built ceiling thirteen feet high and used Flemish bond brick walls thirteen inches thick. There are thirteen windows on the front of the structure, thirteen steps in each flight and thirteen railins at each stair landing. The house is located off of the Blue Grass Parkway and is available to public tours.

Pottinger Station in KY #history #genealogy #kentuckypioneers

Pottinger Station

Pottinger StationSamuel Pottinger Sr. came to Kentucky in 1775 and settled on Pottinger's Creek where he was granted 1400 acres of land by a patent from Patrick Henry, the Governor of Virginia. It was on this site that he built a fort in 1781. During the Revolutionary War he served in the Continental Troops as well as as a Captain in the Kentucky Militia. As time passed, he moved all of his orphaned nine brothers and sisters to the fort. After the war Captain Pottinger built a grist mill and distillery near the fort. His home was "Walnut Hill", and made of bricks.
