The Places Where We Walk - Mercer Co. KY Wills, Estates Deeds - #genealogy #kentuckypioneers

Where We Walk
By Jeannette Holland Austin
Jeannette Holland Austin
Do you ever watch where you step? Because it could be that almost everywhere that we walk underneath the ground is an old Indian village or evidence of a past civilization. As the motivation to discover our past accelerates into the diggings of archeologists, the thought crosses my mind - Were these the bones of my ancestors? Intriguing thought, that the past is some number of feet under the ground and that actual cities have been discovered. Nothing seems to get lost. Think about it. If you believe that we all stem from one human couple, Adam and Eve, then a strapulation of numbers and generations will blow your mind. I have traced some of my ancestors to the 25th cousin to medieval times. This task was enlightening as I saw the same persons again and again woven throughout my lineage. Once the tracing had been made to the nobility, you discover relationships to kings, queens and practically all of European nobility. With this in mind, then, an archelogical site might well apply to you. An excellent beginning is with actual records in the court house, visits to local cemeteries, searching for old bibles, and Kentucky Pioneers.

Mercer County, Kentucky Wills and Estates

HarrodsburgHarrodsburgHarrodsburgHarrodsburgMercer County was formed from Lincoln County in 1785 and was named for the Revolutionary War General Hugh Mercer who was killed at the Battle of Princeton in 1777. The county seat is Harrodsburg, Kentucky. Some of the earliest settlers were: Abraham Bsnta, Alexander Bowling, Daniel and Cornelius Cozine, George Silvertooth, James Harrod, James Hornback, James Quigley, Thomas Freeman, Thomas Threlkeld, Patrick Lowry, Joseph Bohannon, John McMurtry, Harman Van Dyke, Benoni Swearengin and Matthew English. The Wills, Estates, Inventories, Orphans and Guardian Returns are all combined in the same books. A number of pages in these books were too faded and damaged to include. Effort was made by the State of Kentucky to restore some of the images, however, what you see is what you get.

A Message Left By Your Ancestors - Mason County Kentucky Wills, Estates, Deeds #genealogy #kentuckypioneers

A Message Left Just for You From Your Ancestors
By Jeannette Holland Austin
Jeannette Holland Austin
Tracing ancestors is more than simply family group sheets or charts of names. And it is not a picture of a leaf, or tree, but rather consists of people who really existed. Many people trace their ancestry to patriots of the American Revolution and to the first Colonists to America. But there is one thing certain: somewhere, someone who immigrated to this country began writing the story of their lives. It all begins in county records, where the first land grant was acquired or the deed for a home place was filed of record. Then taxes were paid and recorded on tax digests. Sons and daughters were given in marriage and these certificates put on record at the court house. Later on, people died, leaving estates to be dealt with. Wills, inventories, sales, receipts and annual returns surrounded this process, all filed in the county court house. It is where the genealogist begins to unravel the details of a story somewhat inconsistent with family legends and tales. It is the truth. In essence, it is a gift bequeathed to all of the heirs going forward. By that, I mean that the eyes of your descendants will have privy to the information hundreds of years into the future. For this reason, it is also your story. Perhaps now is a good time to discover the details of the dreams of your ancestor, the love which he bore his children, and the heritage bequeathed to you.

How to Create Proving Genealogy Resources - Images of Lincoln Co. KY Wills and Estates - #genealogy #kentuckypioneers

How to Create Proving Genealogy Resources
By Jeannette Holland Austin
Jeannette Holland Austin
Will of Charles ConwayWhen your genealogical research turns up zero, establishing facts for elusive ancestors is tough. One solution is to research around the facts and thus eliminate persons in that generation. We need to determine who is who and prepare a family group sheet for that family irregardless of whether or not they are directly related. This process documents a family and eliminates them. First, locate your ancestor's surname in nearby counties and states. Then search court house records -- deeds, wills, tax records, estates, etc. and establish the facts for each person. Next, complete a family group sheet on that family, noting the sources you used. Proceed accordingly on all questionable families, thus identifying each person of the era and location. Third, examine each family group sheet. Look for nicknames. For example, Betsy, b. ca 1757 could be your Elizabeth, b. 1759. Fourth, once everyone is identified you probably have a number of loose persons for whom you need to discover more information. Try to trace that person so that he may be either identified or elimated; use marriage records, estates, etc. In the earliest pioneering days the eldest son inherited the farm while others went into other acceptable occupations such as physicians, ministers, etc. This took them away from the home place. In other words, erase confusion by identifying and eliminating all families in prescribed areas having your same.

Genealogy Detective Work - Knox Co. KY Taxx Digests - #genealogy #kentuckypioneers

Detective Work
By Jeannette Holland Austin
Jeannette Holland Austin
If you are a genealogist, you are also a detective, analytical, curious, a hoarder of old photos and things, and unique thinker. And over the years, you have developed a keen memory of time, places and dates. Unresolved facts bother you, like "where was he in 1850?" You see, the puzzle is yet incomplete. History and political events tie into your queries. After a study of census records dating from 1790 to 1940, your curiosity leads you to court houses where every conceivability exists. Especially, old wills, estates and marriages, which is just a start. Tax digests, deeds, minutes, inventories, sales, divisions, administrations, guardian ships and the like are next, and so on. An easy beginning is to search the wills on Kentucky Pioneers.

How Lost are the Ancestors? - Jefferson County KY Wills, Estates, Deeds - #genealogy #kentuckypioneers

How Lost are the Ancestors?
By Jeannette Holland Austin
Jeannette Holland Austin
It seems that finding some ancestors is only a dream. Let us face facts, everyone does not create records of themselves. They don't purchase land, pay taxes, register their marriages or file estate records. Some people avoided census takers, or were missed because they resided at a county border or near the frontier. So, what to do? Here are some suggestions. First search the tax digests for likely counties. These digests are never alphabetical. Do not forget to look for defaulters for this may be a clue of when they left the area. Another place to search is the Minutes of the Inferior Court where mention is made of road overseers, commissioners of various public offices, etc. Also, check the Superior Court records looking for law suits.

How Far Back Do the Records Go? - Hickman Co. KY Wills, Estates, Deeds - #genealogy #kentuckypioneers

How Far Back Do the Records Go?
By Jeannette Holland Austin
Jeannette Holland Austin
Any genealogical research needs to be as legitimate as possible and each generation should be verified in order to avoid getting on the wrong track. You can possibly find your ancestor reference in 1066 in the Domesday Book. This was in the days of William the Conqueror when he required a complete listing of all residents in order to tax them. Henry VIII
Henry VIII broke from the Catholic Church in 1538. Search parish records. Expect to find a simple reference, without family information. The name is good enough to establish that person as a resident in 1066 A. D. The best hope of accuracy, however, occurs to about 1500, the era when parish records were being kept in England. The old Irish records did not survive, and there is very little on Scotland. However, from the 1400's (you might find a 1400 entry in some parish registers) through the 17th century, the religion was in upheaval. William VIII broke off from the Catholic Church and established the Anglican religion. This is what you will mostly find so far as parish records are concerned. I cannot tell you if the Catholic records survived. If they did, they are not available to the public. The parish registers are complete with christenings, marriages, births and deaths. The back of each book contains the "mortuary". A christening date is a baptism date. Sometimes the parents christened children born several years apart on the same date. What you have is a general time frame for the birth. There exists records during the 1300s in certain dioceses, like Canterbury. In England, various dioceses maintained public records and the best thing to do is search everywhere there exists a record that early. The monarchy records are replete with many details of the reign. Relatives of the king were "given in marriage" by the king so references can be gleaned from the many records of that monarchy. An very excellent resource of old English records online is Origins. You can obtain copies. Essentially, it is a good idea to zero in on the district where your relatives resided and then locate church records and the like. Many, many person descend from royalty, which means relationships to most of the earls, dukes and aristocrats of the time. Royal families had illegitimate children as a matter of course, some of whom were recognized while others were not. In their enthusiam, some of the records reflect lineages to Adam and Eve. This is not possible. We have no such records. There could be as much as 2000 years of missing records. Regretably, the ancient genealogies are misleading and filled with errors. Jeremiah the prophet gave in marriage Tea Telphi, a daughter of King Zedekiah of Jerusalem sometime after 600 B. C. , in marriage to an Irish prince. It is from that union that most of the kings of England descend. Even if we had the records from 600 B. C. forward, the bible is missing tons of genealogies before and after the flood. We need the Irish records from 600 B. C. to 1066, and even then, the prospects look dim.

Hickman County Wills, Estates, Deeds

Hickman CountyThe site where General Polk fortified a site along the Mississippi River against the Union forces during the War Between the States. For this reason the site was called the Gibralter of the West. Hickman County was founded in 1822 and named after Captain Paschal Hickman of the 1st Rifle Regiment, Kentucky Militia. While he was a resident of Franklin County, Kentucky he was wounded and captured at the Battle of Frenchtown in January of 1813 and killed by Indians in the Massacre of the River Raison. The first county seat was Columbus, Kentucky where a court house was built in 1823. In 1830 the county seat was removed to Clinton, Kentucky.
