A Special Gift

1940 fedora hat
Throughout our lives there are some gifts which are cherished more than others.  The reason is that they provide pleasant memories of the good ole days.  Several years ago I was given a stylish hat from the 1940s which belonged to someone who was like my own mother.  After the war, the 1940s were better days for most families emerging from a depression in our country.  It was kinder times, when Americans won a war which would have delivered the populace into misery and slavery, We appreciated the Constitution of the United States and worked together to make America better for our generation.  I wear the hat every winter.  It keeps me warm from the cold and renders peace to my soul.  The older that people get, the more they appreciate such things.  Now, here we are in the wake of World War III, a war predicted by some to last 26 years. It is very hitler-like, with noisy objections to our flag and Constitution.  The talk of doing away with the very amendments which provide freedom for all presents clues that this noisy generation believes in the suffrage and lies of communism.  While accomplishing nothing personally, they preach equality and demand payment for their inconveniences. But there are still joyful gifts to be given, treasures to be had.  If you are the family historian or genealogist, you have in your possession old photographs of relatives and times past.  The old Model-T, black and white pictures of forgotten relatives driving tractors, This is a past which your children did not know.

In the spirit of the holiday season, why not thumb through the old picture album, frame some of these treasures, and make a gift of them to the younger generation?

Or, perhaps a friend or relative will appreciate a subscription to our genealogy websites.  We will help you out by providing both you and your friend a one-year subscription to 8 genealogy websites for the same price.  It's a two-fer!  Simply subscribe yourself, then send me the name and email of your friend and I will also send them a password.   Email your request

Tax Defaulters provide Clues to Ancestry

All tax digests lists persons who have defaulted on their taxes, usually found as the last page of each district. The tax digests are not alphabetical, so we have to thumb through all of the pages to find anything. The default list does not necessarily reflect persons who refused to pay their property taxes. Rather, from the genealogist's point of view it lends itself more as a report of those who have either died or removed to another county. If the date is close to a mortality census (every 10 years), you can look there. Otherwise, if the person is old enough to have died, then searching the local cemeteries in the area is indicated. In the case of Georgia residents, there were many land lotteries, beginning in 1801 and going to 1832, so this is a good source to check. People were on the go. After the 1832 gold lottery in Georgia, people were moving westward in the state and into Alabama and Mississippi. This same type of trend follows in all of the original thirteen states. What I usually do is read every page of the county tax digest where my ancestor resided, recording the description of acreage, number of acres, names of neighbors, waterways, district, etc. (whatever the tax digest provides) for each year, then trace that same acreage forward. This information provides a time-line for when he resided in the county. When his name no longer appears, I search the default list. As I said, people were on the move. A sensible place to search next is the adjoining counties because the old parent county lines changed with the ascent of the formation of new counties. Next, I look at marriages with that surname. This also gives me a time-line of the marriages of the sons and daughters as well as an idea of whether or not any members of the family were still around. If there was a ten or twenty year gap, say, that means that the older generation has either died or moved away. Of course, a thorough search of the deed records tells a better story, but there may be little or nothing there.

Boone Co. KY Wills, Estates, Inventories 1800 to 1839

Boone County Wills, Moses ,Estates and Probate Records

BurlingtonBoone County was founded in 1798 and named after Daniel Boone. The county seat is Burlington, Kentucky. The court house records begin in 1800 and contain a complete record of old wills, estates, inventories, guardianships and other miscellaneous estate items all bundled together in the same book. In other words, when you research these books, detailed account of the estate usually follows the last will and testament up until the time that it was settled.

Images of Campbell Co. KY Wills and Estates 1794 to 182

Campbell County Wills, Estates, Probate Records

Newport, KentuckyCampbell County was ormed on December 17, 1794 two years after the creation of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. It was taken from sections of Scott, Harrison, and Mason Counties and was named for Colonel John Campbell (1735 to 1799), a Revolutionary War soldier and Kentucky Legislator. The original county included all of present Boone, Kenton, Pendleton, and most of Bracken and Grant counties. The county seat of Wilmington survived from 1794 to 1797 and its court house was built of logs, later replaced in 1815 by a brick structure. Newport was the county seat until 1823 when it was removed to Visalia. This site was unpopular and the county seat was returned to Newport in 1824, lasting until 1840. In 1840, Kenton County was created, primarily out of a significant portion of Campbell. The Kentucky General Assembly then forced the county to move its seat to Alexandria, closer to the center of the new, smaller Campbell County. In 1883, after years of lobbying, the General Assembly established a special provision to allow Newport to designate a Court House District separate from the offices in Alexandria.
