Lincoln County Probate Records

Lincoln was one of the original three counties formed out from Virginia's Kentucky County. Three counties were separated from Virginia to form the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1792; viz: Fayette, Jefferso and Lincoln Counties. The county seat is Stanford, Kentucky.

Mason County Genealogy Records

Mason County was taken from Boubron County in 1788 and was named for George Mason, a Virginia delegate to the U.S. Constitutional Convention. The county seat is Maysville, which is situated on the edge of the outer Bluegrass Region. The depositions regarding matters of land of the froniersmen Simon Kenton and Daniel Boone are found in the early records, copies of which are on this website.

Breckinridge Co. KY Images of Wills 1800-1975

Breckinridge County KY Genealogy

Breckinridge County was established in 1799 from a portion of Hardin County. When Abraham Lincoln was seven years old, his father, Thomas Lincoln and his family spent a few weeks in Hardinsburg and occupied a small cabin near what is now the Kentucky FFA Leadership Training Camp. The Lincolns left Kentucky by crossing the Ohio River at Cloverport on a log ferry operated by Jacob Weatherholt. The Confederate Army burned the local court being used by Union troops as barracks during the War Between the States. The third court house was burned in 1958. The county is known for its Victoria Coal Mines, named after Queen Victoria, when the Cloverport exported coal oil used to light Buckingham Palace.

Mercer County, Kentucky Wills and Estates

Mercer County was formed from Lincoln County in 1785 and was named for the Revolutionary War General Hugh Mercer who was killed at the Battle of Princeton in 1777. The county seat is Harrodsburg, Kentucky. Some of the earliest settlers were: Abraham Bsnta, Alexander Bowling, Daniel and Cornelius Cozine, George Silvertooth, James Harrod, James Hornback, James Quigley, Thomas Freeman, Thomas Threlkeld, Patrick Lowry, Joseph Bohannon, John McMurtry, Harman Van Dyke, Benoni Swearengin and Matthew English. The Wills, Estates, Inventories, Orphans and Guardian Returns are all combined in the same books. A number of pages in these books were too faded and damaged to include. Effort was made by the State of Kentucky to restore some of the images, however, what you see is what you get.

The Cumberland Gap

Cumberland Gap in Kentucky

During the Revolutionary War, there were fewer than 200 settlers in Kentucky. One of the most famous adventurers of all time was Daniel Boone.  His bravery during America's first days has been played many times by various movie stars. It was Boone who brought settlers through the Cumberland Gap of the Appalachian Mountains into Kentucky.  After this, settlers began arriving from Virginia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.
Thus, the Cumberland Gap, is considered to be the first great gateway to the West.  It was not only the trail of the settlers, but also of Native Americans, the long hunter, and buffalo. The first known discovery of the Gap was in 1750 by Dr. Thomas Walker, an English naturalist and scientist who led a small party of explorers to the Gap.  He called it the Cave Gap. Daniel Boone came along in 1769 to explore the area and cut blaze marks in the trees along a trail which passed through Virginia to Kentucky's bluegrass region.
If the journey was not treacherous enough, there was also the occasional massacre by renegade natives. During the summer and fall of 1784, more than 100 travelers were killed on the Kentucky side of the gap. Like the ill-fated Donner Party, travelers had to abandon wagons full of household necessities in bad weather to travel the narrow gap by foot or horse. By 1796 it was known as the Wilderness Road having seen as many as 200,000 travelers, including Abraham Lincoln's parents and grandparents as they emigrated west. The Gap was then widened to allow Conestoga Wagons through to lands west.The Gap was used for commerce by 1800. Kentuckians drove long lines of horses and cattle through the Gap to the markets in the east. But by the 1830s, other east/west routes had been established, including the National Road, causing the Gap's popularity to decline.

The land grants and (later) affidavits which he gave to assist claims of settlement are sprinkled throughout old Kentucky documents.  Some affidavits are found in Cumberland County on Kentucky Pioneers
