Should Genealogists Continue to Visit Court Houses? #genealogy #kentuckypioneers

Should Genealogists Continue to Visit Court Houses?

WillsShould one continue to visit the old court houses, especially considering all of the genealogy added to the internet? I have been visiting court houses since 1964 and have to tell you that some pretty uncomfortable changes have occurred. The labor force is a problem. In some instances, those who work in the office of the clerk of the probate court do not know what a last will and testament is, much less how to find the old will books. Another disturbance is the sloppy manner in which the old books are treated. If most of these counties had not been microfilmed in the 1950s, the information would be lost. Faded ink, moisture damage and the like make certain records virtually impossible to photocopy. Another issue is "off-site storage". We are in the age of having to store old books because of a shortage of space. When I recently visited a court house in Georgia, I had to wait several days for the "off-storage" books to be sent to the court house! This was really inconvenient, since I had travelled there from Atlanta. Some of the old books are finding a home in local historical societies while others are in the possession of the State Archives. How would one know these things? Additionally, in the old days a clerk might take a book home to work on it and this maneuver prevented it from being included in a fire. Occasionally some court house books show up in antique stores and attics! These things exist. What I am saying here is that all records were not microfilmed. Yet all is not lost, however. Avid researchers, like myself, seek such collections. Some of these private collections are reflected in my books and in databases on Kentucky Pioneers. Happy hunting to members!

Battle of Little Mountain in Kentucky #history #genealogy #kentuckypioneers

The Battle of Little Mountain

Estill's DefeatThe Wyandot Indians raided Mt. Sterling on March 20, 1782 and a 14-year-old Jennie Gass was tomahawked and a former slave of Captain James Estill, Monk Estill, was captured. Captain Estill came to Estill's Station about 1779. This area is often called Fort Estill and a historical marker is posted near its location between Berea Road and the Blue Grass Army Depot fence. The Indians interrogated the slave and got an exaggerated version of the number of fighting men at Estills Station which convinced the Indians to put off an assault on the settlement. Two days later, Captain Estill and 26 settlers found the raiding party at Little Mountain near Mt. Sterling and attacked. Captain Estill was killed, and 13 of his fighters were killed or badly wounded. However, during the fight, Monk Estill managed to escape and carried with him one of the wounded white settlers back to the Estills Station. The distance was almost 25 miles. Monk Estill later distinguished himself as a maker of gunpowder and is thought to have mined saltpeter (potassium nitrate), a necessary component of black powder at Peyton Cave. Monk was married three times, and his wives bore 30 children. Later, the son of Captain Estill, Wallace Estill, emancipated Monk because of his service to the family. Although he was no longer their slave, the Estill family did not abandon Monk Estill in his old age. Wallace Estill provided for the former slave until his death in Madison County in 1835.

Wayne County Wills, Estates, Marriages

Battle of Fallen TimbersWayne County was formed December 13, 1800 from Pulaski and Cumberland Counties. It was named after General "Mad Anthony" Wayne, a hero of the American Revolutionary War as well as the Northwest Indian War. It was his victory at the Battle of Fallen Timbers which ended the Indian threat against Kentucky settlers. The Americans lost 33 soldiers during this battle, while the Indians lost twice as many with a retreat to the British-built fort of Miamis on the Maumee River. Wayne County fought for the Confederates during the War Between the States and in 1861, the Confederate Government of Kentucky passed an Act to rename Wayne County to Zollicoffer County in honor of Felix Zollicoffer who died at the Battle of Mill Springs.

Bourbon County Wills, Estates, Marriages, Obituaries, Deaths

Paris, Kentucky

Some of the most beautiful country in America is in Paris, Kentucky. In 1780 the district of Kentucky belonged to three counties in Virginia, viz: Fayette, Jefferson and Lincoln. Old Bourbon County was formed in 1786 from Fayette and Bourbon Counties, Virginia, and originally comprised 34 northeastern counties of Kentucky. When the new State of Kentucky was created in 1792, Bourbon became a county. The land itself was given by Fayette County, Virginia, and was named after the French House of Bourbon in honor of the assistance which France gave to America during the Revolutionary War. The courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1872 and again in1901, resulting in the loss of county records. Whiskey, made from corn had a distinctive flavor and became a popular drink termed Bourbon whiskey as opposed to rye whiskey. The whiskey barrels were markedOld Bourbon when they were shipped downriver from the local port on the Ohio River. The port from where the whiskey was shipped was called Limestone, now Maysville, and was located in Bourbon County until the borders were redrawn in 1789 and it became Mason County. The county seat is Paris, Kentucky.
