Lincoln County Kentucky Wills, Estates, Deeds

Lincoln was one of the original three counties formed from a county in Virginia called "Kentucky County". Three counties were separated from Virginia to form the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1792; viz: Fayette, Jefferso and Lincoln Counties. The county seat is Stanford, Kentucky.

"Ashland" Henry Clay House

"Ashland" was originally built by Henry Clay who resided there from 1812 to 1851. The present house on the site was reconstructed in 157 by his son, James Clay, who used the same foundation and original floor lan, except that he added elements of the Italianate designs. Most of the furnishings on display in the house today are original to the house. The property once consisted of some 600 acres of land. Henry Clay imported thoroughbred horses and pedigreed livestock to Kentucky and built a private racetrack as well. Henry Clay served as the U. S. Senator and Speaker of the House of Representatives. He was in favor of the War of 1812 and negotiated its peace in 1814.

Fayette County Wills, Estates, Deeds

Fayette County was one of the original three counties created from the former Kentucky County, Virginia by the Virginia Act in 1780, along with Jefferson and Lincoln counties. Together they separated from Virginia in 1792 to become the state of Kentucky. Originally, Fayette County included land which makes up 37 present-day counties and portions of 7 others. It was reduced to its present boundaries in 1799. The county is named after Marquis de LaFayette who came to America to join the rebelling English colonies in the American Revolutionary War. On January 1, 1974, Fayette County merged its government with that of its county seat of Lexington, creating a consolidated city-county governed by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government.

Wayne County, Kentucky Wills, Estates, Deeds

Wayne County was formed December 13, 1800 from Pulaski and Cumberland Counties. It was named after General "Mad Anthony" Wayne, a hero of the American Revolutionary War as well as the Northwest Indian War. It was his victory at the Battle of Fallen Timbers which ended the Indian threat against Kentucky settlers. The Americans lost 33 soldiers during this battle, while the Indians lost twice as many with a retreat to the British-built fort of Miamis on the Maumee River. Wayne County fought for the Confederates during the War Between the States and in 1861, the Confederate Government of Kentucky passed an Act to rename Wayne County to Zollicoffer County in honor of Felix Zollicoffer who died at the Battle of Mill Springs.

Pictured is Bowling Green, Kentucky. The history of Warren County dates back to several Native American villages and burial mounds. General Elijah Covington was one of the first land owners. McFaddens Station was established as early as 1785 on the northern bank of the Barren River at Cumberland Trae. by Andrew McFadden. Warren County was established in 1796 and was named after General Joseph Warren of Revolutionary War fame as haviing dispatched William Dawes and Paul Revere on the famous midnight ride. Warren also fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill.

The Enduring Footpints of a West Point Graduate from Millersburg

Henry Tureman Allen was born in Sharpsburg, Kentucky and served on the staff of General Nelson Miles; later served at the military attache to Russia and Germany. He also served in the Spanish-American War in the Battle of El Caney. He was promoted to Brigadier-General in 1917 and was given command of the 90th Infanry Division, then a National Guard Division based in Texas. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. "Some men leave enduring footprints in the sands of time, such as Henry Tureman Allen, the brother of J. G. and S. C. Allen of Millersburg. He is one of the five graduates at West Point in June, and will go on a tour through Europe with a host of other graduates."

Zerelda James, the Tantalizing Mother of Jesse James

Jesse James was the son of a Baptist preacher of prominence and eloquence in his day. The father was a native of Logan County, Kentucky, and the mother (whose maiden name was Zerelda Cole) was born in Woodford County, Kentucky, about half way between Versailles and Lexington where the father kept a hostelry known as Cole's Tavern. Upon the death of the father the widow removed to the neighborhood of Stamping Ground in Scott County to be among her relatives. This is where she met and married in 1840 Rev. Robert J. James. IN 1843 they removed to Missouri, settling in Clay County, where Jesse was born in 1845. Mrs. James was a handsome, vivacious, devil-may-care girl, careless of good or evil report. Tall, large-framed, and full of animal life, she was the universal favorite among those of the opposite sex, and her marriage to a clergyman was one of those surprises she was fond of indulging in. Her hair was black as the raven's wing, her eyes black and piercing. Her temper was quick and tiery, her tongue sharp and cutting, and her enmity deadly and enduring. Later in life she became a large woman, her hair sprinkled with gray, but her eyes steill keen and piercing and her temper ungovernable as ever. Several years after the death of Mr. James, she was married to Robert Mimms, whom she was known to have harassed into the grave. Afterwards, she married Dr. Samuels, a prominent physician of Clay County. She is attributed to the evil life led by her sons, Frank and Jesse James. It was the home guards in their town which encouraged Frank and Jesse to join the Confederate lines uner the notorious Quantrell. Jesse was only fourteen years of age. When they sacked the town of Lawrence, Kansas, Jesse shot down women and children without compunction and later boasted that he had murdered thirty-six citizens with his own hand. But the crowning horror of his life occurred on the morning of September 17, 1861, in Missouri, when a gang of Quantrell's band of cut throats under Bill Anderson galloped into the village and sacked the store, plundered houses, then waited for the train to arrive from St. Joseph (bound for St. Louis), which they stopped and ordered thirty two sick federal soldiers en route to the hospital in St. Louis to descend from the train. Then, they stood them in a row and the two James boys loading their pistols as fast as they emptied, shot all of them to death.
