17th Century Flintlocks - Boyle Co. KY Wills, Esttes - #geneaogy - #kentuckypioneers

Jeannette Holland Austin17th Century Flintlocks
By Jeannette Holland Austin

While Virginia settlers thought of themselves as living more splendidly than their families in England, Kentuckians were true explorers and adventurers. Their success weighed heavily upon their personal ability to survive in a wilderness setting laced with hardship and Indian tribes. Yet, such primitive conditions actually carved the trail which led further West. First, people came down out of Pennsylvania and crossed the Shenandoah Valley treking through the Blue Ridge Mountains and settled in remote regions dominated by various Indian tribes. By the time that Daniel Boone and other explorers began surveying this country, there were already families of Scotch-Irish and German immigrants who had traveled the trail together and created little communities. 17th Century Flintlocks

The Stuff that we are Made of - Bourbon Co.. KY Wills, Estates - #genealogy - #kentuckypioneers

Jeannette Holland AustinThe Stuff That We Are Made Of
By Jeannette Holland Austin

The stuff that we are made of literally flows through our veins. Our DNA is a blueprint of ourselves which may be traced back in time to our ancestors. And we are a mixture of many individuals who played their roles in history. Siblings born of the same parents possess features from a variety of ancestors, and the dosage is not equal. Although it is quite interesting to discover the origin of our features, statue, and personality traits while viewing old photographs (everyone should do this), the more interesting aspect of it is the decisions made in the face of adversity. No generation escapes troubles, for all are tested. We share many common elements of those past lives, viz: war, religious beliefs, immigration, marriages, divorce, death and so on. And our trials of today run a pretty close parallel to those of the past. After it is all done, scholars write a history of those days. Owing to the difficult times of our ancestors, how did they stack up? Everyone's history is not written by the scholar. Yet, the ancestors left their story for us to tell. It is in the records (census, county court houses, pensions, bibles, cemeteries, etc.) During troubling times, the memories of their era is somewhat consoling, especially when we know that they stood among the righteous, exhibited bravery in the wars, and had a strong belief in freedom. Yes, this country was founded upon that one belief. Freedom! I found some old letters of one of my great-grandfathers and discovered that he was overtaken by a deep sadness when he left his family during the Civil War. In this way, I understood that same sadness existed during my own unhappy moments. As one traces the families further back in time, the old last wills and testaments display a virtual reality of those days. We can almost put ourselves there, in the shoes of our kin. There are many questions concerning the migrations and lifestyles of our ancestors. And the answers are there, but require a great diligence and patience. And might I say, time? During this era, genealogy research is very much improved, however, as more records are added to the internet. Virginia Pioneers is processing more old wills and estates, and I must say, the answers are in the details.

The final question is: "How will we stack up?"

Paris, Kentucky Paris, KentuckySome of the most beautiful country in America is in Paris, Kentucky. In 1780 the district of Kentucky belonged to three counties in Virginia, viz: Fayette, Jefferson and Lincoln. Old Bourbon County was formed in 1786 from Fayette and Bourbon Counties, Virginia, and originally comprised 34 northeastern counties of Kentucky. When the new State of Kentucky was created in 1792, Bourbon became a county. The land itself was given by Fayette County, Virginia, and was named after the French House of Bourbon in honor of the assistance which France gave to America during the Revolutionary War. The courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1872 and again in1901, resulting in the loss of county records. Whiskey, made from corn had a distinctive flavor and became a popular drink termed Bourbon whiskey as opposed to rye whiskey. The whiskey barrels were marked Old Bourbon when they were shipped downriver from the local port on the Ohio River. The port from where the whiskey was shipped was called Limestone, now Maysville, and was located in Bourbon County until the borders were redrawn in 1789 and it became Mason County. The county seat is Paris, Kentucky.

Tax Defaulters are Important Genealogy Resources - Boone Co. KY Wills, Estates - #genealogy - #kentuckypioneers

Jeannette Holland AustinTax Defaulters are Important Genealogy Resources
    By Jeannette Holland Austin

All tax digests lists persons who have defaulted on their taxes, usually enumerated as the last page of each district. The tax digests are not alphabetical, so we have to thumb through all of the pages to find anything. The default list does not necessarily reflect persons who refused to pay their property taxes. Rather, from the point of view of the genealogist it lends itself more as a report of those who have either died or removed to another county. If the date is close to a mortality census (every 10 years), you can look there. Otherwise, if the person is old enough to have died, then searching the local cemeteries in the area is indicated. People were on the go and we have to be detectives.

Boone County Wills, Inventories, Estates and Probate Records

Burlington Boone County was founded in 1798 and named after Daniel Boone. The county seat is Burlington, Kentucky. The court house records begin in 1800 and contain a complete record of old wills, estates, inventories, guardianships and other miscellaneous estate items all bundled together in the same book. In other words, when you research these books, detailed account of the estate usually follows the last will and testament up until the time that it was settled.

The Wilderness Home in KY - Bell Co. KY Wills, Estates - #genealogy - #georgiapioneers

Jeannette Holland AustinThe Wilderness Home in Kentucky
    By Jeannette Holland Austin

As the cultivation of tobacco was too convenient a profit to ignore, the English were disappointed because they wanted the colonists to supply raw goods to the English markets and were looking forward to shipments of iron, timber, potash, hemp, silk and other commodities. However, the English authorities shot themselves in the foot by repressing every effort of the colonists to manufacture their own clothing and other necessities. Every coat worn by the planter, every dram of spirits consumed by him obtained by trading tobacco with Holland, diminished the value of the Virginia market for English goods. And, as the Europeans moved across the Shenandoah Valley into Kentucky, a different type of emigrant emerged on the landscape. He was the true adventurer. The energetic lifestyle of the hunter and trapper willing to form militias to protect the homestead against marauding Indians created its own forts, and economy. So it was that German immigrants and the Scotch-Irish during the early part of the 18th century took the wagon road out of Pennsylvania and crossed through the Blue Ridge Mountains. Daniel Boone Previously, head coverings were sewn with beaver fur sent to England for working up, and then returned in the shape of hats to be sold or bartered. But the Kentuckian explorer trapped beaver and other animals for fur and used it to craft necessities required in the wilderness home. History of Virginia in the Seventeenth Century by Philip Alexander Bruce.

Precious Freedoms Won by Our Ancestors - Barren Co. KY Wills, Estates #geneaogy #kentuckypioneers

    Jeannette Holland Austin
The Precious Freedoms Won by Our Ancestors
    By Jeannette Holland Austin

Freedom is a precious heritage won by our Ancestors! But do we really know ourselves? The clues lie within our own DNA. Because, you see, we are a composite of those who lived before us. The way that we think, our appearance, spiritual beliefs and inclinations, all of this is a DNA assemblage of the puzzle of us. To learn some answers about ourselves we must look into the past. Yes, into the lives of those who brought us to this time and place. Discovering our roots is not only fun, but surprisingly delightful. The lineage doubles every generation (into the past), which makes for an unlimited resource of ancestors who were part of the histories which we study today. For example, it is easy to trace the lineage back to a Revolutionary War Soldier. Gosh! The pension itself is loaded with information about the battles they fought and famous officers they served with. You just do not realize this great value, until you read the pension. Then, there are the Civil War Pensions. Of course, the old wills, estates, deeds, tax digests really open the puzzle to a wonderfully new perspective. The old script used is beautifully executed with a quill and India ink. Some of these documents are simply worth framing!

    Barren County Wills, Estates, Deeds

Barren CountyBarren County was established in 1798 from land provided by Green County and Warren Counties. Six courthouses have served the county throughout its history, the first built of logs. It was settled by the Scotch-Irish and the county seat is named Glasgow (after Glasgow, Scotland).

Jeannette Holland AustinThe Trail Through Virginia into Tennessee and Kentucky
    By Jeannette Holland Austin

Abraham Aaron was born in Lancaster County, Kentucky but removed to Pittsylvania County with his father where he resided a long while after the Revolutionary War. He was drafted for six months as a Militiaman in 1780 in the company of Captain William Witcher in Pittsylvania County. The troops marched to Salisbury, North Carolina,, then to Camden. He was in the Battle of Stono when the Americans were victorious and captured a number of prisoners. Afterwards, he marched to various places throughout the countryside and finally back to Camden, after having served a full term. He resided in Greene County, Tennessee until 1824 before removing to Adair County, Kentucky. As so many others had done, after the war, new lands opened up for settlement and Abraham Aaron moved westward. The trail into Kentucky usually began in Virginia.

What does it mean "Child in Esse" Bracken Co. KY Wills, Estates #genealogy #kentuckypioneers

    Child in Esse
    By Jeannette Holland Austin
    Jeannette Holland Austin
It is not uncommon for a wife to be expecting a child at the time that her husband writes his last will and testament, or dies intestate. To learn if this was the fact, one should look for the legal language of "in esse" in the will. It means "in existence". Otherwise, a complete study of the probate records is indicated. If the person died intestate (without a will), then the letters of administration, annual returns, vouchers, receipts, sales, inventories, etc. should be closely examined for any activity which resembles the birth of another heir. This includes Inferior Court cases which might be on the books as well as Minutes of the Inferior Court. Pioneer BabyThere are some census records which could help. Say, the husband died in 1841. The 1850 census should reveal the name of the widow and all of her children. Then there is the court for orphans where bonds are given and guardians are appointed. Old newspapers (announcing births and deaths), cemetery plots which contain infant graves, and so on, need to be carefully considered. One of the most interesting facets of researching in Virginia is that the wills, inventories, sales and deeds are contained in one book. This is the best source for learning little tid-bits of information which help to form the puzzle.

    Bracken County Wills, Estates, Deeds

Land in Bracken CountyLand in Bracken CountyBracken County was organized in 1796 from parts of Mason and Campbell Counties. Originally, the county extended to southern Nicholas County (north of the Ohio River and west of the Licking River). It has two creeks (named for William Bracken), the Big and Little Bracken. William Bracken was a surveyor by trade and visited the area in 1773. He was later killed by Indians during the Northwest Indian War. The first county seat was Augusta, Kentucky but was moved to Woodward Crossing (Brooksville).
