Remembering the Restrictions of the Mother Country - Wayne County Wills, Estates - #genealogy #kentuckypioneers

Remembering the Restrictions of the Mother Country
By Jeannette Holland Austin
Jeannette Holland Austin
When the county records in Kentucky are exhausted, the genealogist directs his eye towards Virginia and Pennsylvania. It is not surprising to learn that this genealogy could easily trace back to the early 1600s. Generally, people in New England seemed to gravitate Westward, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries. The attract was land. It was always land because as fields wore out, there was a greater need for fertile soil. Too, the incentive to move westward was not only land grants and homestead tracts, but the idea of mining gold and silver. There were more interesting reasons for moving West than there was to remain behind and build a homestead in the original thirteen colonies. The first settlers in America were true adventurers, with the spirit of freedom. These are the ones who did not wish to remain in European towns and restricted by class restrictions from individual ambition. Class distinctions were a loud reminder that a yeoman could never be a gentleman or rise in class. gentry classEven the gentry was required to dress in the clothes in the clothing of a tradesman, and so on. The American colonies offered broad opportunities. Is it any wonder that there were so many patriots willing to fight the Mother Country for freedom? That is who they were.

Wayne County, Kentucky Wills, Estates, Deeds

Battle of Fallen TimbersBattle of Fallen TimbersBattle of Fallen TimbersWayne County was formed December 13, 1800 from Pulaski and Cumberland Counties. It was named after General "Mad Anthony" Wayne, a hero of the American Revolutionary War as well as the Northwest Indian War. It was his victory at the Battle of Fallen Timbers which ended the Indian threat against Kentucky settlers. The Americans lost 33 soldiers during this battle, while the Indians lost twice as many with a retreat to the British-built fort of Miamis on the Maumee River. Wayne County fought for the Confederates during the War Between the States and in 1861, the Confederate Government of Kentucky passed an Act to rename Wayne County to Zollicoffer County in honor of Felix Zollicoffer who died at the Battle of Mill Springs.

How Family Stories Shape the Future - Warren County KY Wills, Estates - #genealogy #kentuckypionees

How Family Stories Shape the Future
By Jeannette Holland Austin
Jeannette Holland Austin
Little children love to hear family stories. In fact, they have a deep need for them. The reason is to learn more about their own identity. It is satisfying to learn how grandma made a funny mistake, or how others handled difficult times. What family story does not begin with "Times were harder when I was growning up," etc. Did you play with toys? Or, did your great grandmother spend her evenings sewing dolls for Christmas? Then there is Uncle Joe who owned a T-model Ford. The further that we trace back in time, the more that we learn about ourselves. We resemble our families in temperament and appearance but how do we resemble them in their struggles and the wars which they fought for the future? Something to think about.

General Elijah Covington was one of the first land owners. McFaddens Station was established as early as 1785 on the northern bank of the Barren River at Cumberland Trae. by Andrew McFadden. Warren County was established in 1796 and was named after General Joseph Warren of Revolutionary War fame as haviing dispatched William Dawes and Paul Revere on the famous midnight ride. The Trail to Kentucky your Ancestors Took - Images of Shelby County KY Wills, Estates - #genealogy #kentuckypioneers

The Trail into Kentucky
By Jeannette Holland Austin
Jeannette Holland Austin
Religious persecution and the search for land motived Scotch-Irish and German immigrants to come to America. A popular trail was the port of Philadelphia and temporary settlement in Berks and Bucks counties. Then they followed the trail through the Shenandoah Valley, through Augusta and Frederick counties into the wilderness mountains (of West Virginia) to Kentucky, Sometimes they settled in Hampshire County Virginia (now West Virginia), Botetourt and Shenandoah Counties. The idea for the genealogist is to follow Wilderness Road.

The Road to Genealogy Answers - Muhlenberg Co. KY Wills, Estates, Deeds - #genealogy #kentuckypioneers

Road to Answers

The Road to Answers
By Jeannette Holland Austin
Jeannette Holland Austin
The road to discovering answers about our ancestors is long and winding. It is a journey which requires years upon years of TIME and PATIENCE. It seems as though relatives are disinterested or cannot remember names or events. And the records require hours upon hours to locate and study. Even if we find abstracted records, such as deeds, wills, estates and even marriages, to gain the full picture demands locating the record itself and reading it for oneself. All the names surrounding our families must be examined, remembered and researched separately before a picture begans to appear on the page. One snifts it out, gets a "feel" for that which applies to his ancestors and their times. We complete family group sheets and pedigrees with names and dates, yet still do not have the story. For the story of the past includes the history and economy of their times, and their part in it. When we have those answers, we begin to know our kin and understand them. Too, given the duplication of names, it is important to make certain that we are dealing in the proper era. 33-1/3 years comprises one generation. In past eras, marriages occurred between 16 and 20 years of age. Death claimed many women during child birth, so there were second and third marriages. It is a good idea to consider that a woman in her fifties was probably not bearing children. Researching census records is important, but cannot help you too much before 1850. Thus, everything needs to be double-checked with the county records. Deeds, Marriages, Wills, Estates, Civil Court and Inferior Court Records, Pensions (yes, there pensions of soldiers and their widows at court houses), Tax Digests. The search at the court house is tedious, but oh so important to piecing together information. Anytime that one can save themselves a drive to the court house or archives and hours of research time by paying for a service online, they have saved themselves "money". It is true that the internet helps genealogists, however, the task is still daunting. Sometimes, I have to sit down, study old and recent research findings, then think it out. The ancestors took this road for good reason.
