Remembering the Restrictions of the Mother Country - Images of Wayne Co. KY Wills, Estates 1802 to 1807

Jeannette Holland Austin
Remembering the Restrictions of the Mother Country
By Jeannette Holland Austin

When the county records in Kentucky are exhausted, the genealogist directs his eye towards Virginia and Pennsylvania. It is not surprising to learn that this genealogy could easily trace back to the early 1600s. Generally, people in New England seemed to gravitate Westward, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries. The attract was land. It was always land because as fields wore out, there was a greater need for fertile soil. Too, the incentive to move westward was not only land grants and homestead tracts, but the idea of mining gold and silver. There were more interesting reasons for moving West than there was to remain behind and build a homestead in the original thirteen colonies. The first settlers in America were true adventurers, with the spirit of freedom. These are the ones who did not wish to remain in European towns and restricted by class restrictions from individual ambition. Class distinctions were a loud reminder that a yeoman could never be a gentleman or rise in class. gentry classEven the gentry was required to dress in the clothes in the clothing of a tradesman, and so on. The American colonies offered broad opportunities. Is it any wonder that there were so many patriots willing to fight the Mother Country for freedom? That is who they were.

Wayne County, Kentucky Wills, Estates, Deeds

Battle of Fallen Timbers Battle of Fallen TimbersBattle of Fallen Timbers Wayne County was formed December 13, 1800 from Pulaski and Cumberland Counties. It was named after General "Mad Anthony" Wayne, a hero of the American Revolutionary War as well as the Northwest Indian War. It was his victory at the Battle of Fallen Timbers which ended the Indian threat against Kentucky settlers. The Americans lost 33 soldiers during this battle, while the Indians lost twice as many with a retreat to the British-built fort of Miamis on the Maumee River. Wayne County fought for the Confederates during the War Between the States and in 1861, the Confederate Government of Kentucky passed an Act to rename Wayne County to Zollicoffer County in honor of Felix Zollicoffer who died at the Battle of Mill Springs.

The Trail into Kentucky
By Jeannette Holland Austin
Jeannette Holland Austin
Religious persecution and the search for land motived Scotch-Irish and German immigrants to come to America. A popular trail was the port of Philadelphia and temporary settlement in Berks and Bucks counties. Then they followed the trail through the Shenandoah Valley, through Augusta and Frederick counties into the wilderness mountains (of West Virginia) to Kentucky, Sometimes they settled in Hampshire County Virginia (now West Virginia), Botetourt and Shenandoah Counties. The idea for the genealogist is to follow Wilderness Road.

Where We Walk - Images of Mercer Co. KY Wills, Estates, Guardianships 1786 to 1824

Jeannette Holland AustinWhere We Walk
By Jeannette Holland Austin

Do you ever watch where you step? Because it could be that almost everywhere that we walk underneath the ground is an old Indian village or evidence of a past civilization. As the motivation to discover our past accelerates into the diggings of archeologists, the thought crosses my mind - Were these the bones of my ancestors? Intriguing thought, that the past is some number of feet under the ground and that actual cities have been discovered. Nothing seems to get lost. Think about it. If you believe that we all stem from one human couple, Adam and Eve, then a strapulation of numbers and generations will blow your mind. I have traced some of my ancestors to the 25th cousin to medieval times. This task was enlightening as I saw the same persons again and again woven throughout my lineage. Once the tracing had been made to the nobility, you discover relationships to kings, queens and practically all of European nobility. With this in mind, then, an archealogical site might well apply to you. An excellent beginning is with actual records in the court house, visits to local cemeteries, searching for old bibles, and Kentucky Pioneers.

Mercer County, Kentucky Wills and Estates

Harrodsburg Harrodsburg Harrodsburg Harrodsburg Mercer County was formed from Lincoln County in 1785 and was named for the Revolutionary War General Hugh Mercer who was killed at the Battle of Princeton in 1777. The county seat is Harrodsburg, Kentucky. Some of the earliest settlers were: Abraham Bsnta, Alexander Bowling, Daniel and Cornelius Cozine, George Silvertooth, James Harrod, James Hornback, James Quigley, Thomas Freeman, Thomas Threlkeld, Patrick Lowry, Joseph Bohannon, John McMurtry, Harman Van Dyke, Benoni Swearengin and Matthew English. The Wills, Estates, Inventories, Orphans and Guardian Returns are all combined in the same books. A number of pages in these books were too faded and damaged to include. Effort was made by the State of Kentucky to restore some of the images, however, what you see is what you get.
