How Lost are the Ancestors? Jefferson Co. KY Wills, Estates - #genealogy - #kentuckypioneers

Jeannette Holland Austin
How Lost are the Ancestors?
By Jeannette Holland Austin

It seems that finding some ancestors is only a dream. Let us face facts, everyone does not create records of themselves. They don't purchase land, pay taxes, register their marriages or file estate records. Some people avoided census takers, or were missed because they resided at a county border or near the frontier. So, what to do? Here are some suggestions. First search the tax digests for likely counties. These digests are never alphabetical. Do not forget to look for defaulters for this may be a clue of when they left the area. Another place to search is the Minutes of the Inferior Court where mention is made of road overseers, commissioners of various public offices, etc. Also, check the Superior Court records looking for law suits.

The Road to Answers #genealogy

The road to discovering answers about our ancestors is long and winding.  It is a journey which requires years upon years of TIME and PATIENCE. It seems as though relatives are disinterested or cannot remember names or events. And the records requires hours upon hours to locate and study.  Even if we find abstracted records, such as deeds, wills, estates and even marriages, to gain the full picture demands locating the record and reading it for oneself.  All the names surrounding our families must be examined, remembered and researched separately before a picture begans to appear on the page.  One snifts it out, gets a "feel" for that which applies to his ancestors and their times.  We complete family group sheets and pedigrees with names and dates, yet still do not have the story.  For the story of the past includes the history and economy of their times, and their part in it.  When we have those answers, we begin to know our kin and understand them.  Too, given the duplication of names, it is important to make certain that we are dealing in the proper era.  33 1/3 years comprises one generation. In past eras, marriages occurred between 16 and 20 years of age.  Death claimed many women during childbirth, so there were second and third marriages.  It is a good idea to consider that a woman in her 50's was not bearing children.  Researching census records is important, but cannot help you too much before 1850. Thus, everything needs to be double-checked with the county records.  Deeds, Marriages, Wills, Estates, Civil Court and Inferior Court Records, Pensions (yes, there pensions of soldiers and their widows at court houses), Tax Digests.  The search at the court house is tedious, but oh so important to piecing together information.  Anytime that one can save themselves a drive to the court house or archives and hours of research time by paying for a service online, they have saved themselves "money".  It is true that the internet helps genealogists, however, the task is still daunting. Sometimes, I have to sit down, study old and recent research findings, then think it out.  The ancestors took this road for good reason.

Stuff we are made of

The stuff that we are made of literally flows through our veins.  Our DNA is a blueprint of ourselves which may be traced back in time to our ancestors.  And we are a mixture of many person. People born of the same parents possess features from a variety of ancestors, and the dosage of the children is not equal.  While it is interesting to discover the origin of our features, statue and personality while viewing old photographs (everyone should do this), the more interesting aspect of it is the lifestyles and decisions which they made in the face of adversity.  No generation escapes adversity, for all are tested.  We share many common elements of those past lives....war, religious beliefs, immigration, marriages, divorce, death and so on.  And our trials of today run a pretty close parallel to those of the past.  After it is all done, scholars write a history of those days.  Owing to the difficult times of our ancestors, how did they stack up?  Everyone's history is not written by the scholar.  Yet, the ancestors left their story for us to tell.  It is in the records (census, county court houses, pensions, bibles, cemeteries, etc.)  During troubling times, the memories of their era is somewhat consoling, especially when we know that they stood among the righteous, exhibited bravery in the wars, and had a strong belief in freedom.  Yes, this country was founded upon that one belief. Freedom!  I found some old letters of one of my great-grandathers and discovered that he was overtaken by a deep sadness when he left his family during the Civil War.  In this way, I understood that same sadness existed during my own unhappy moments.  As one traces the families further back in time, the old last wills and testaments display a virtual reality of those days.  We can almost put ourselves there, in the shoes of our kin.  There are many questions concerning the migrations and lifestyles of our ancestors.  And the answers are there, but require a great diligence and patience. And might I say, time?   During this era, genealogy research is very much improved, however, as more records are added to the internet. South Carolina Pioneers is processing old wills and estates, and I must say, the answers are in the details.

The final question is: "how will we stack up"

Should Genealogists Continue to Visit Court Houses? - Hardin Co. Wills, Esttes - #genealogy - #kentuckypioneers

Jeannette Holland AustinShould Genealogists Continue to Visit Court Houses? By Jeannette Holland Austin

Wills Should one continue to visit the old court houses, especially considering all of the genealogy added to the internet? I have been visiting court houses since 1964 and have to tell you that some pretty uncomfortable changes have occurred. The labor force is a problem. In some instances, those who work in the office of the clerk of the probate court do not know what a last will and testament is, much less how to find the old will books. Another disturbance is the sloppy manner in which the old books are treated. If most of these counties had not been microfilmed in the 1950s, the information would be lost. Faded ink, moisture damage and the like make certain records virtually impossible to photocopy. Another issue is "off-site storage". We are in the age of having to store old books because of a shortage of space. When I recently visited a court house in Georgia, I had to wait several days for the "off-storage" books to be sent to the court house! This was really inconvenient, since I had traveled there from Atlanta. Some of the old books are finding a home in local historical societies while others are in the possession of the State Archives. How would one know these things? Additionally, in the old days a clerk might take a book home to work on it and this maneuver prevented it from being included in a fire. Occasionally some court house books show up in antique stores and attics! These things exist. What I am saying here is that all records were not microfilmed. Yet all is not lost, however. Avid researchers, like myself, seek such collections. Some of these private collections are reflected in my books and in databases on Kentucky Pioneers. Happy hunting to members!

Comparing Genealogy Records - Green Co. KY Wills, Estates - #genealog6 - #Kentuckypioneers

Jeannette Holland AustinComparing Genealogy Records
By Jeannette Holland Austin

Comparing genealogical records to determine how they fit into your ancestor's timeline can be tedious. For example, the mere mention of your ancestor as a witness to a deed may seem trivial. However, it does established his residence in that county for that date. Another vague source is tax digests which are not alphabetical (listed by districts) and difficult to read. But the devil is in the detail. The tax records lists specific lands. Example 202-1/2 acres. That denomination came from a land lottery. So the next step is to search the land lotteries from 1805 to 1832 in Georgia. Almost everybody drew in a land lottery at one time or the other. old roadOld roads.

It was free land, so why not? Whether or not they ever took it up is another question. That is where the deed records come in and such new information should send you forthwith to a search of that county's deeds. Also on the Tax Digests are other tracts of lands, names of waterways, names of adjoining neighbors, and (always) the county where the land was located. But wait, we are not finished. At the end of each district is a list of "defaulters". These are persons who did not pay their tax for that year. That could mean that the person died or left the county. Only the deed records in all of the counties where he owned land will provide further data. Remember, during the Indian removals, people were moving on. By Jeannette Holland Austin

Three courthouses have served Green County. In 1804, a brick building replaced an earlier structure, and while no longer operational, it stands in the Greensburg Historic District (downtown) and is the oldest court house building in Kentucky.
